Abstract:In this paper, data envelopment analysis (DEA) is applied to exhaustively examine the efficiency of the main airline companies in the European airspace by using novel input/output parameters: business management factors, network analysis metrics, as well as social media estimators. Furthermore, we also use network analysis to provide a better differentiation among efficiency values. Results indicate that user engagement, as well as the analysis of the position within the airspace-from an operative perspective, influence the efficiency of the airline companies, allowing a more comprehensive understanding of its functioning. Keywords: data envelopment analysis; network analysis; social media; European airlines
Abstract:Measurement of environmental and energy economics presents an analytical foundation for environmental decision making and policy analysis. Applications of data envelopment analysis (DEA) models in the assessment of environmental and energy economics are increasing notably. The main objective of this review paper is to provide the comprehensive overview of the application of DEA models in the fields of environmental and energy economics. In this regard, a total 145 articles published in the high-quality international journals extracted from two important databases (Web of Science and Scopus) were selected for review. The 145 selected articles are reviewed and classified based on different criteria including author(s), application scheme, different DEA models, application fields, the name of journals and year of publication. This review article provided insights into the methodological and conceptualization study in the application of DEA models in the environmental and energy economics fields. This study should enable scholars and practitioners to understand the state of art of input and output indicators of DEA in the fields of environmental and energy economics. Keywords: energy economics; environmental economics; data envelopment analysis (DEA); energy efficiency; efficiency measures
This paper deals with evaluating congestion in free disposal hull (FDH) models. There are several approaches in data envelopment analysis (DEA) literatures which discuss the theory and application of congestion. However, almost all of these approaches considered convex DEA technologies. So, in the case of nonconvex technologies, including FDH technology, this field is almost nil. This paper makes an attempt to fill in this void. To do so, this study provides a pairwise comparisons-based algorithm to evaluate congestion in FDH model. This algorithm identifies the sources of congestion and estimates its amounts. It is also capable of detecting the losses amounts of output due to congestion. The validity of the proposed model is demonstrated using some numerical and empirical examples.
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) and free disposal hull (FDH) analysis are alternative nonparametric techniques for constructing production and related frontiers, and for measuring the performance of production units relative to those frontiers. We compare DEA and FDH on several criteria, including their implications for the structure of production technology, the way they measure producer performance relative to the technology, the way they treat input and output slacks, and on computational considerations.

The establishment of branched-hospitals did not lead to a long-term negative effect on hospital operational efficiencies. Our data indicated the importance of improving scale efficiency via the optimization of organizational management, as well as the advantage of a different form of branch-establishment, merging and reorganization. This study brought an insight into the practical application of DEA window analysis on the assessment of hospital operational efficiencies.
This study was the first to report the application of DEA window analysis model in the assessment of operational efficiencies of multi-branched public hospitals in China. Through the comparison of operational efficiencies (including technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency) before and after the establishment of branched hospitals, our data provided valuable evidence for strategy making on the development and management of multi-branched hospitals when planning to set up new hospitals.

Visualization of data envelopment analysis (DEA) problems can be a very informative step in order to get insight into the problems and their characteristics. Through the various visualization methods, one can literally look at the DEA problem and the related data from different perspectives. Doing so would help to efficiently identify possible regularities and patterns, as well as irregularities and anomalies in the data. Despite its importance and benefits, visualization is vastly neglected in the DEA applications. Even though there are several suggested methods for DEA visualization in the literature, the graphical investigation step is absent in the majority of the studies. The reason may lie in the fact that the DEA software packages severely lack any high-dimensional visualization features. This paper is an introduction to DEA-Viz, a new DEA software which is mainly focused on visualization of the DEA problems. The software is a free-to-use cloud-based applet that can shed light onto a DEA problem using various visualization methods, and thus from various aspects. The intuitive design of the DEA-Viz helps researchers to generate diverse plots of their datasets, in order to gain insight into the problems and augment the quantitative analysis. 2ff7e9595c
